This event has ended.

Pottery from the remote village of Mata Ortiz is now on display and sale at the Nouvelle Vague Café and Gallery at 468 Lincoln Place, Brooklyn NY. Just blocks from the Eastern Parkway/ Brooklyn Museum train station.
The pottery from Mata Ortiz, also known as Casas Grandes or Paquime style, is prized by collectors for the attention to detail the potters give to each piece of art as well as the ever evolving creative style that continues to emerge from the village. Many of the pots on display are from some of the very best known and award winning artists from the village.

The amazing story of Mata Ortiz and the revival of an ancient art form which has evolved into a modern art movement has captivated people since it emerged onto the art world in the early 1980’s. All of the pottery from is hand coiled with clay dug from the local area and hand painted with paints made from local minerals.
Mata Ortiz is situated near the UNESCO Archaeological Zone of Paquime, in what is now present day northern Mexico.

Although people refer to Mata Ortiz as a style, an ingenious number of styles, colors, shapes and designs are produced by the people of Mata Ortiz. This remote village of just over 2000 people has produced artists who have won major awards in national and international art shows.

The Emmy Award winning film “The Renaissance of Mata Ortiz” gives you a background of this art movement that changed the villagers lives and many of those around them.
