Maurice Renoma is a renowned Parisian stylist, photographer, artist and decorator. Renoma’s artistic career began in the 1960’s when his innovative designs challenged and forever altered the conventions and styles of contemporary menswear. Fashion, which Renoma treats as an art form in its own right, was his first artistic passion; in the 1990’s, Renoma began experimenting with his other love – photography. He subsequently published his first collection of photographs entitled Maurice Renoma: Modographe. It is this initial union of fashion, photography, art and sensuality that this all-new exhibition pays homage to and shares its title with.

As Renoma’s photography career rapidly progressed, he became well known for his digitally altered photographs; his iconic works present the unpredictable, the provocative and the insane. He creates striking hybrid images of humans with bestial heads, androgynous gender composites and unexpected nudes. Photographs of sexualized female nudes with male or animal body parts elicit unpredictable reactions from viewers. In some works, Renoma manipulates images of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and other classic icons in surprising and often humorous situations. In other more traditional photographs, he captures the beauty and immediacy of a single moment that only the artist and the camera have witnessed; he recognizes and conveys to his audience the importance of his subjects’ subtleties.

There is a thoughtful intelligence and playfulness to his works that distinguishes Renoma from other experimental photographers. Well received by the public and press alike, his work is not only aesthetically intriguing and clever but conceptually brilliant and impeccably executed. His photographs have been displayed at galleries internationally, including in Japan, Italy, France and South Korea.
