This event has ended.

N a Hutch.,.,., un dera Stare. cAsE: The title, culled from the 1889 Jacob Riis article: How The Other Half Lives, is the basis for Wilson’s subterranean installation at NOVELLA.

To insist on illuminating what is so often ignored—the lonely corners of a room, the provocative sound of a footstep—either sinister or promising, the anticipation and dread it carries, how we breathe…the air, we share it with not only our fellow viewers but those who have previously been in the room, the dust that has settled and then drifted about, the air that has traveled through vents connecting other rooms, the outside, furnaces, air conditioning, we share this air with other living creatures, machines, and buildings all the while so heartily desiring and persisting on how everything is separate. To illuminate this condition is not to collapse the boundaries among things, but to show their connections; to reveal their systemic nature.

Wilson’s work does this with its materials, its scale, its surroundings, and most importantly, its inflections that insist upon the nuances that exist within, and between, the temporal spaces of past and future narratives.
