Howard Scott Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings by Woong Kim, opening on December 5th and concluding on January 18th, 2014. This is his sixth solo show with the gallery.
The dozen works on display continue to evidence Kim’s gift for combining collage with oil paint in order to create translucent, nuanced colors and richly textured surfaces that are often just shy of becoming bas reliefs. Hints of figuration abound, notably aspects of the landscape: these are not site-specific details, but more like something compelling that’s glimpsed from the window of a fast-moving car.
In his monograph for Woong Kim’s 2004 show at Soeul’s Sungkok museum, ARTnews critic Gerard Haggerty observed: “Because Woong Kim’s paintings record an accumulation of many different moments, time is among the elements that he collages onto canvas. So too, we must spend time to unlock his works’ secrets. Do so, and a door begins to open. But don’t assume you’ve found all there is to see. Wait a while, look again, and chances are that you’ll find something you missed.”
With twenty-seven solo shows to his credit, Woong Kim has been acclaimed nationally and internationally in venues such as ARTnews, Art in America, Arts Magazine and The Washington Post. His work is featured in the Yale University Museum of Art, the National Museum of Contemporary Arts in Seoul, Seoul’s Sun Gok Museum of Art, and many other distinguished public and private collections.
Wong Kim was born in Soul, Korea and has lived and painted in New York since 1973.He studied painting with Jenifer Barlett and Robert Mangold at the School of Visual Arts in New York; and then studied for his MFA with Al Held and John Walker at Yale University School of Art.
