“Unhinged” Exhibition
Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition
This event has ended.
Unhinged, Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s Fall Group Art Show presents one open show and three juried shows in one sweeping exhibition.
Presented in the Ground Floor gallery is a national juried show of 100 pieces, selected from 1100 submissions by artists all around the country. N. Marshall Price, Curator of Contemporary and Modern Art at the National Academy
Museum and sole juror of the show says:
In selecting the works for Unhinged I was not only looking for a variety of mediums and approaches to various subjects but also artists who approached traditional mediums in new and creative ways.
Unhinged is BWAC’s first international show. It’s a celebration of uninhibited creativity and technology. What could be more global than communication through smart phones or other smart devices? Artists have been invited to communicate through imagery created with the touch of a button and scads of ingenuity. 250 works will be displayed on large screens, plus an exhibition of the printed versions of the prize winners.
Unhinged opens on Saturday September 21 with an opportunity to meet and talk to the participating artists. There will be an all-day music performance by the Stefan Bauer Experience featuring Stefan Bauer on the vibraphone, Earl McIntyre on the tuba, and Chris Bacas on the tenor and soprano sax. At a 3PM ceremony, juried shows prize winners will be announced and $6000 in cash prizes will be awarded. On opening weekend Sunday, a full concert of new compositions, poetry and music written specially for Unhinged will be performed by the Composers Concordance.
Special events are planned for every day of the show – including the Sunday acoustic performance series, UnPlugged in Red Hook; Clay Weekend, and the Red Hook Film Festival on October 12 – 13. It’s the seventh year of this two-day showcase of shorts and features. This year the festival theme The Wake of Hurricane Sandy gives our film community a venue to voice, to air, and to screen the images and films of work inspired by the heroic struggle endured by our community, neighbors and neighborhoods devastated by the storm.
With such a variety of media, aesthetics and points of view under one roof, there’s surely something for everyone. The BWAC gallery is a perfect destination for an autumn weekend. It is across from the Fairway supermarket and down the block from IKEA in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, with its trendy boutiques and restaurants and the city’s best view of Lady Liberty. It is accessible by public transportation and biking is a breeze!
