This event has ended.

Daniel Heidkamp presents his second New York solo exhibition, a series of outdoor paintings entitled “Sneeze Buds.” The canvases echo a sun-fueled romanticism found in much of the Hudson River School, but stylistically are much rougher. Unspoken in his pictures here is the fact that all but one were made in the Green-Wood Cemetery. Does it matter to us that such natural vibrancy occurs in a place of mourning and solemnity? The casual viewer will have no visual evidence to contextualize this scenery. And yet there’s the inevitable decay of vegetation contrasted with the timelessness of oil painting: the open secret of all landscape painting. The location he’s chosen is one of refuge in an urban environment, but unlike the wild, it is the city which grows unencumbered while nature is corralled within Olmsted-ian parameters.
