This event has ended.

"The world is constantly growing, decaying and shifting. It is all a natural process, and in my work I attempt to create harmony in these cycles where growth and decay coexist."
-Rachel Kohn

Crossing Art presents Harmonious Decay, a solo exhibition featuring the works of Rachel Kohn. This show will be the inaugural solo exhibition for the artist's new abstract encaustic series Landscapes, from 2011-13. Rachel Kohn is the award recipient from the first Crossing Art juried exhibition, Going Green in 2011.

Earthy tones, biomorphic shapes and varying textures juxtapose one another to fill the negative and positive spaces of the surface planes in each of Rachel Kohn's canvases. They pose to transform natural elements found in rocks, weeds, and moss while fusing them with the quintessential mediums used in art, turning cycles of growth and decay into visual landscapes. Utilizing a physical approach, she carves, caresses, paints and melts multiple layers of watercolor, aquaresin, foam and wax to create an undeniable, while on the same note, subdued build-up of these textures and complex layering that reveal and somewhat conceal what lies beneath.? Her organic ensembles are a visual exploration to define "...patterns within the natural world and are influenced by human fragility, degeneration, devastation, and renewal," says Kohn.

Rachel Kohn was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1981, and currently lives and works in New York. Kohn received her B.A. from Skidmore College in Art and Mathematics and recently earned her MFA from Hunter College in Painting.? She teaches painting, drawing and three-dimensional collage at the College of New Rochelle, and teaches sewing at Brooklyn Art Space. Currently Kohn has a studio in Long Island City, Queens and has exhibited throughout New York, Los Angeles and London.
