These two artists celebrate spatial and temporal notions of painting. They examine the relationship between the chance and the control through the process of composing line, color, and structure. Hayes uses a methodical and systematic process based on the concept of “brushless” painting, while Russinof fully embraces her spontaneous and
emotionally charged brushstrokes as well as her “loose grid.” Both artists succeed
in creating a pictorial complexity and gestural texture that speak beyond its
supposed manifestation of the act of pure creation.

Hayes’ work seems digitalized or computerized from a distance due to his
meticulous technique and mark making. In his “Amalgamation” series, the paint is loaded into a dropper several colors at a time and then released onto the surface of the canvas. As the paint flows through the dropper, colors mix and form swirling convex drips that create a field of resonating color and complex spatial structures. Exposing the paint’s natural ability to form shapes and patterns on its own on the surface of the canvas, Hayes uses paint to create a multi-dimensional space and kaleidoscopic like texture that challenges the viewer’s perception.

Russinof has always been interested in combining an expressionist tendency with a relatively minimalist appreciation of structure. The title Haiku refers to a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world. In Russinof’s Haiku, the artist re-interprets nature by creating an order of her own through her intuitive process of painterly construction and deliberate positioning of her layers and spaces. Her work conveys a modern, refined elegance and vibrancy that resonate and counter-resonate with the energy and roughness of her brushstrokes.

Gregory Hayes works and lives in Brooklyn. He has received his BFA in painting at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and his MFA at Brooklyn College in
2011. His work has been exhibited in many exhibitions in the United States and art fairs internationally including Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado and SCOPE Basel.
