Margaret Tsirantonakis will be exhibiting recent oil paintings, including several large canvases. The paintings depict complex interior spaces with still-life objects and feature vibrantly layered color and painterly brushstrokes. The artist presents passages of perceptual detail next to areas of abstract flat color.
Certain objects and motifs appear with frequency in the paintings. The artist uses mirror views, portraits, and reproductions of images as motifs in her interior and still-life arrangements. A vase of flowers, a replica of an ancient artifact, and a textile from Crete become focal points that Tsirantonakis arranges in her studio to paint. But it is not the object itself that is of interest; rather, it is the interplay between the object and the surrounding environment, manifested in light, pattern, and emotion, that captures the artist’s imagination.
