This event has ended.

Mr. Nomura is one of the living masters of the Kyo Yuzen style of kimono design, based on a dyeing technique perfected in Kyoto around the middle of Japan’s Edo period, which lasted from 1603 to 1867. Nomura uses traditional dyeing methods that result in a sedate tone. At the same time, he injects a bright liveliness by exquisitely depicting scenery or flowers on the fabric. His original works lend a traditional element of grace and beauty to women who live in the present age. Mr. Nomura believes that a kimono should enhance the charm and beauty of the person who wears it and that his creations only truly become “kimono” when they are worn. He hopes that this display of his works will help more people understand the richness of kimono design and their creation.

The theme of this year is “Oku no Hosomichi - Basho’s Journey.” This exhibition showcases 15 original kimonos which Nomura created from images he saw on his travels, in which he followed in the footsteps of Basho – one of the most popular poets of the Edo Period, 300 years ago. The Great East Japan Earthquake brought about unprecedented catastrophic disaster two years ago in the Tohoku region, where Basho traveled in the early 18th century. On his own travels, Nomura recollected once again the earthquake disaster, which had been fading from his memory little by little, and began making a work with the intention of keeping it in mind. Through his kimonos, Nomura wishes to convey a strong message about supporting Tohoku in its recovery from the Earthquake.
