This event has ended.

ArtNowNY presents Future Ruin, a solo exhibition by up-and-coming New York-based artist, James Scott. Presenting a body of new work comprised of multiple mediums including drawing, painting and photography, the show builds upon Scott’s examination of physical principles learned through his rigorous training as an architect. This will be the first solo gallery exhibition of the emerging artist’s work.

Through his multi-media approach, James Scott illustrates spatial concepts beyond the visual plane. Devising a new approach to drawing using a process of cutting, stenciling, and overlapping laser cut patterns of circles and ellipses to create multi-faceted planes, he is able to transcend the limitations of traditional perspective-based drawing techniques. Scott’s approach of “building” paintings, drawings and photographs from former iterations of a design was developed through his education in architecture and bridges his art between the formal realms of the graphic and the sculptural. Ultimately, Scott’s work presents a multi-faceted, optical-illusionary and mathematically governed Cubism, wherein a multidimensional understanding of space can be expressed, allowing him the freedom to explore complex theories, such as the possibility of four dimensional space.

Influenced by the Modernist aesthetic, which aspired to achieve a universality of expression, Scott’s work reveals similar aspirations, but through the use of physically governing principles. In exploring the mechanics of space, he references the basic conditions of our existence; the cyclical nature and simultaneous reality of creation and destruction, growth and decay, life and death. His work seeks to defy the inevitability of its own eventual non-existence, while exposing its viewer to this shared connection of physical principles that lead us in and out of being. Scott’s work offers both a description and a demonstration of the intangible, larger ideas of existence through their examination of the physical world we inhabit, offering visual perspective of the forces that universally unite us.
