This event has ended.

Fitzroy Gallery is pleased to announce f2113, an exhibition by Sean Dack. This is the artist’s second show at the gallery.

The group decided to go for an afternoon walk into a nearby forest. It was the perfect way to spend their last full day in this bucolic setting.

There was a clearly marked path and the midday autumn light threw shadows in high contrast across the ground and on each other. There was very little talking within the group just the ambient sounds of nature and metronomic syncopation of their footsteps.

After a few miles they came upon a clearing filled with high grasses and the buzzing of late season bees. Towards the edge of the clearing they came upon a box approximately twelve inches square.

“What is that?”
“Open it.”

“I’m not touching that thing. You do it.”

Upon inspecting the box they found what appeared to be a camera lens nestled within velour padding, however it looked like no camera lens they had ever seen.

They decided to take it with them.

Returning to the country house they gave the box a thorough inspection and found it to have certain hallmarks of unknown provenance. The aperture settings on the lens started off in normal succession but had a final setting of f2113. They also realized that you could peer through the lens much like a telescope, minus the amplification of sight. It was considered a curiosity and not much more. Little thought was given to the device throughout the rest of the evening.

On the trip back to the city where they all lived, one of the passenger decided to take the lens out of its housing and peer through it out the moving car window.

“I don’t know what I’m seeing…”

“I…I can’t believe what I’m seeing…”

“It’s not what we know, it’s something else,” pulling the lens away from her eye, vision returning to normal.

“What are you talking about? What is it that you see?”

“The future.”
Canvas prints, sculpture and a video based around a short story, written by the artist, set in the present and one hundred years in the future simultaneously. Each work is a varied state of speculative time mapping through hyperfocality only achieved with the use of non-camera image making tools within the digital world.

Sean Dack lives and works in New York. He received his M.F.A. from Columbia University in 2002, and exhibits in galleries and museums in the United States and internationally.
