"Interiors" Exhibition

Tibor de Nagy Gallery

poster for "Interiors" Exhibition

This event has ended.

The gallery presents a group exhibition of works by eleven artists. Curated by Barry Rosen, it will comprise a selection of works-- mostly paintings or works on paper with the exception of Burckhardt photographs and McMakin sculpture-- that are brought together by the theme of interior, or the suggestion of interior as intimacy.

Many of the works are by gallery artists with close associations to painterly representational imagery including Biala, Nell Blaine, Jane Freilicher, Fairfield Porter, and Larry Rivers. The Porter and Rivers paintings depict figures seated in a chair and standing. The other paintings are close-up interiors with expansive views from the windows, a deliberate contrast between the intimacy of an interior and the sweep of buildings and rooftops beyond.

Roy McMakin is a Seattle-based artist who is noted for his mostly utilitarian furniture as sculpture and for installation. He is represented in the show by a piece that is made up of eight chairs, found and created, that either hang on the wall or are arranged in no particular formation on the floor nearby. The artist’s intention is that the chairs on the floor can be used and re-arranged by gallery goers. The project room has an installation of McMakin’s drawings, all of the same size, and a table/sculpture in the middle.
