This event has ended.

Brennan & Griffin presents the group exhibition “Page 179, Artforum, September 2013.”

The gallery took out a full-page advertisement in the September issue of Artforum Magazine which framed a blank space on the magazine page. On the bottom of the page readers were prompted to:

1. USE SPACE PROVIDED TO CREATE AN ARTWORK

2. SEND TO GALLERY

Exhibition dates and a submission deadline were listed with artists “to be announced.”

Inspired equally by artist interventions with the magazine page and advertising as well as by mail-in drawing competitions often found in children’s magazines, the gallery sought to invite readers to an open ended, yet materially standardized provocation. Artforum was selected specifically for its global reach and readership, widely recognizable square format, and in an effort to engage with the historical use of the magazine page as a medium. Lynda Benglis’ Artforum ad from the magazine’s November 1974 issue and Dan Graham’s “Homes For America” photo and text essays published in Arts Magazine in 1966-67 served as reference points for such an engagement. However, the gallery’s interest lies more in utilizing the self-serving nature of the gallery advertisement in a Fine Art publication to create a populist, broad-reaching invitation to submit artwork for potential exhibition.

Submissions were received from all over the globe - from writers, gallerists, unknown artists, and established artists. The installation is comprised of a range of solutions to this assignment.
