Through an abstract and simplistic style of painting, Lee creates works that emphasize the tonality and subtlety of contrasting colors and textures. MiSun Lee’s drawings and paintings intend to set an artistic standard based on the value of the art itself. She regards her works as “tough, simple, restrained,” rather than “fancy, relaxed, or particularly detailed.” Lee tends to handle her paints freely without particular caution or precision, often using various hues of gray to create a fogginess and opaqueness to her works, shrouding perhaps a hidden landscape or artistic thought. There is a certain aura about her works which some might consider a tribute to solemnity, even depression.In some of her pieces, Lee paints with a specific dryness so that the paint breaks upon the surface creating roughness and texture. In other works she is able to manipulate the paint to almost resemble water color, free flowing across the surface with faded hues blending effortlessly.
