LYNCH THAM is pleased to present an exhibition of recent works by Greg Kwiatek, on view from October 30 to December 22, 2013. From large-scale paintings to gouaches, the exhibition presents a selection from a body of sublime work that evokes Kwiatek’s enduring fascination with the ethereal beauty of Fire Island and Maine.
My recent work is a continuation of issues that have been of interest to me for many years - atmospheric light, tonal color, saturated color, and the moon as an icon. It is against my nature to simply be a painter of the moon, even though I’ve great respect for those who have done so. That said, I’ve attempted to employ the moon, and the sun in full form and circular abstraction as well. This gives me more latitude through the working process and prevents me from painting myself into a corner. It is my nature to drift with the sky, the ocean and sand. These forces are powerful springboards and they humble me. They are timeless and it is my mission to respond to them as best I can while I’m here.

Greg Kwiatek was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and lives in New York. He has an extensive exhibition history including shows at David Zwirner Gallery, New York; Kunstraum, Munich; William Patterson University; Maravian College; Lake Champlain Maritime Museum; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; Weatherspoon Art Museum; The University of North Carolina, Greensboro; New York University; Korn Gallery; Drew University, Madison; Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ; The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, The New York Times, Art News, The Village Voice, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Carnegie Magazine, New York Arts, The East Hampton Star, among others. Kwiatek is a recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship Award, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts Studio Grant, Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Grant, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant.
