Split Seven is loosely fashioned after the Split 7” EP. These albums are a collaborative effort between two musicians or bands, each pooling their resources to release a record. The format of the Split 7” is simple; each artist gets one side of a shared single album. While the A and B Sides remain distinct, the record itself often forms a surprisingly singular statement. The approach of sharing resources, as well as the two sides of a circular plane of vinyl leads to an exchange of new ideas between the artists, as well as between the listeners of their music.

Like the Split EP, this exhibit will present works by various artists in pairs. These couplings will promote a “loose chatter” between the individual works and within the show as a whole - as pieces impact one another through sheer proximity and a shifting conceptual context. These visual exchanges will cast new light on the works of the participating artist, while bringing together communities who assemble to study and celebrate the handmade image.

The works in Split Seven favor the nonobjective. The artists utilize broad sources ranging from 18th century Romantic landscape painting to 8-bit video games. Formally, their art employs a variety of working methods including intuitive mark making, collage, and painted text. While each artist’s approach to their work is unique, they all share a core belief that their chosen materials are primary in making visual meaning and metaphor.
