This event has ended.

Tornay’s work has been discussed in The New Republic and the Philadelphia Inquirer. In an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer for an exhibit at the Riverrun Gallery in Lambertville NJ, Victoria Donohoe praised his “spontaneous, appealing, often color-rich neighborhood scenes”. Tornay has painted landscapes in Pennsylvania, Vermont and, in this exhibit, are several paintings completed while a artist resident at the Heliker-Lahotan Foundation on Cranberry Island, Maine.

In his landscapes, Tornay’s energetic brushwork builds uninterrupted rhythms from foreground to background. Variations of green and blue dominate his palette. A loose paint application in darker tones establishes a romantic mood. In the views of Cranberry Island, Maine, the tidal pool appears in several compositions, in an elemental play of earth, foliage, sky, wind and water. Tornay’s Philadelphia scenes highlight the cityscape and the interaction of man-made and natural forms.

In a series of still lives painted in his Germantown, Philadelphia studio, the artist contemplates domestic objects, fruit, tools, geometric solids and blocks of wood layed out on home-made wooden tables. The arrangements are ordered yet natural, with subtle distortions and warm tonalities.

Originally from New York, Ian Tornay lives in Philadelphia and teaches at the Delaware College of Art and Design in Wilmington, DE as area coordinator for interior design. He was educated as an architect at the Cooper Union, NYC before receiving an MFA in painting from Queens College, NYC.
