This event has ended.

Gary Snyder Gallery presetns Patrick Strzelec, an exhibition of sculptures. The exhibition is the artist’s first in New York in over a decade. Seven of the artist’s meticulously crafted mixed media sculptures will be on view, as well as a selection of preparatory drawings. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition, with an essay by Jenny Moore.

The exhibition and its accompanying publication offer a detailed view of the artist’s work since 2011, a period of intense formal and technical innovation for the artist. Over the past three years, Strzelec has created a remarkable body of abstract sculpture in an incredibly diverse range of materials—aluminum, ceramic, epoxy, plaster, steel, and wood, to name a few. Works in the exhibition such as Playin’ the Ink (2012), Smoke Rings (2013), and Block Head (2013) demonstrate Strzelec’s mastery of these materials, as well as his unique ability to transform them into highly charismatic—albeit somewhat inscrutable—objects and forms. Wry humor and, above all, personality are pervasive qualities of the artist’s work. They link him to a tradition of painting and sculpture that includes artists as diverse as the Chicago Imagists, Bill Bollinger, Eva Hesse, Ralph Humphrey, and Richard Serra.

Born in Chicago in 1956, Patrick Strzelec received his BFA from Southern Illinois University and his MFA from Rutgers, State University of New Jersey. Since 1990, he has exhibited his work internationally—first with Barbara Toll Fine Arts (1990, 1991, 1992, New York) and later with Jay Grimm Gallery (2000, 2002, New York), OH + T Gallery (2002, 2004, 2006, Boston), Michael Schultz (2006, Berlin), and Galerie Rackey, (2007, Bad Honnef, Germany).
