This event has ended.

The Usual Magic will show new drawings and broadsides with machine-embroidered text that China Marks writes herself. The work is complex, mysterious and profound. She calls her drawings ‘little dramas.’

“I consider my role as an artist that of an entertainer. I want my drawings to compel and amuse, to make eyes widen and jaws drop. During the process of making a drawing, I am in the audience as well as on stage, often surprised, sometimes thrilled at what I see, or so bored and restless and unhappy that I make drastic changes until my own jaw drops. Process is the transformative agent.”

Marks has exhibited her work in galleries and museums across the US and Europe. She is recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the 2011 fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts, which named her a Millman Fellow, and, most recently, a grant from Pollack Krasner foundation, which has made this new work possible. She lives and works in Long Island City.
