This event has ended.

CLOVER’S FINE ART GALLERY presents Visions of Afro-Latino Art, an in-depth exploration of African cultural expression in Dominican fine art. Groundbreaking in originality and innovative in style, the extraordinary paintings of renowned Dominican artists Miguel Gómez and Jesús Desangles represent a creative breakthrough with a powerful message.

Miguel Gómez’s works are inspired by Villa Mella, a black neighborhood of Santo Domingo that is regarded as a cultural treasure and keeper of African traditions. Gómez, a self-described “cultural investigator”, contrasts the crisis of identity that haunts many of his compatriots with a new aesthetic that recognizes the beauty, sophistication and pageantry of their reality.
The art exhibited, according to Gómez represents “years of struggle and my desire to instill pride in those who have been marginalized”. Miguel Gómez was described by critic Ignacio Nova as “skilled and capable, he doesn’t look away from what surrounds him. He does not look at Paris to try to be authentic; neither does he looks toward New York to be modern. He looks into his own history. He works with elements that a national art history places in his hands….”

Jesús Desangles is from a family of artists. His great grand uncle, Luis Desangles Sibilly, was “one of the illustrious precursors of plastic arts” in the Dominican Republic. Following the family tradition, Jesús Desangles was awarded a Gold Palette at the 21st Art Festival of Cagnes-Sur-Mer, in France, at the age of nineteen. Decades later, his works would become part of the Caribbean´s most prestigious permanent collections.

Art historian Cándido Gerón said of Desangles: “Aside from a great technical mastery, he reveals the impronta of a dynamic artist enchanted with his art and a lover of investigation…” Many of his works are explorations of the African and Taino presence. His drawings and paintings reflect a quest for identity with a compelling vision. Art historian Enrique García Gutiérrez of the University of Puerto Rico, described him as “Powerful, poetic, playful…his signs multiply and unfold.”

Miguel Gómez and Jesús Desangles are genuine masters; they unveil and pay homage to Dominican culture. They share with the world perhaps the finest authentic Caribbean art.

Clover’s Fine Art Gallery is particularly committed to promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of the art and artists of the Caribbean.
