This event has ended.

envoy enterprises presents Erika Keck’s third solo exhibition, Limp. Continuing to utilize the materiality and process of painting, this new series furthers Keck’s inquisition into the potential of paint, color and form. Through this process connections are formed between the material, emotionality, and it’s relation to the body.

By employing her distinct method of weaving and layering acrylic paint, Keck achieves a three dimensionality that winks at sculpture but remains true to the methodologies of painting. Creating colored strips and sheets with layers upon layers of dried paint, Keck then weaves, drapes, and accumulates these paint fragments to make dense and complex surfaces.

The paintings range between intimately small to large and heroic. They feel both voluble yet fragile and on the verge of collapse. There is also a weight to the paint that becomes visceral and conjures relationships to the body and to the physicality of material.

Formalism is key to the ways Keck’s paintings are constructed. By using repetition, abstraction and elemental forms, Keck plays with the history of painting’s pasts while also expanding these limits and expectations. It is through the elemental that Keck brings to the fore universalities of how painting, color and form affect both the painter and the viewer. For Keck, painting is the medium to reveal archetypes and get to the core of human emotion.

Erika Keck (1976, Albuquerque, NM) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She studied at the University of New Mexico. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and cultural institutions in New York, San Francisco and Albuquerque.
