This event has ended.

For Chimera, her first solo exhibition at Third Streaming, Saya Woolfalk will continue her ongoing investigation of a fictional species of women called Empathics as mythological and genetic chimeras. A chimera is both an imaginary female monster with disparate parts, and a scientific term for a genetic organism composed of two or more genetically distinct tissues – for example, partly male and partly female, or an artificially produced individual having tissues from several species. Woolfalk will explore the beauty and violence of this hybrid condition in video, photography, painting and performance.

Woolfalk’s The Empathics is a mixed media project that explores the work of a fictional group of women who inhabit and explore the unfamiliar experience of interspecies hybridization. The artist uses this science-fiction inspired project to attempt to undermine stable conceptions of identity and to examine how hybrid identities emerge and transform through biological and cultural contact.

Saya Woolfalk is a New York artist who re-imagines the world in multiple dimensions through sculpture, installation, painting, performance and video. She has exhibited at PS1/MoMA; Deitch Projects; Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Studio Museum in Harlem; Momenta Art; Performa09; and has been written about in Sculpture Magazine and on Art21’s blog. With funding from the NEA, her solo exhibition, The Institute of Empathy, ran at Real Art Ways from Fall 2010 to Spring 2011. She is currently an artist-in-residence at the Newark Museum.
