This event has ended.

Singular Beauty is a photographic examination of cosmetic surgery, seen through the lens of artist Cara Phillips. Instead of focusing on portraits of patients and procedures, she focuses on the machines, tools, and consultation rooms rarely seen by anyone except those who are seeking perfection, at any price. In the world imagined by Phillips, stark and beautiful light reveals the talismanic quality of the spaces where beauty is created in the 21st century.

The artist, herself a former model and makeup artist, was inspired by her own experiences as a member of the “industrial beauty complex,” the resulting photographs offer a unique view into a world where perfection is merely an injection away.

Cara Phillips graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Selected group exhibitions include, Winkleman Gallery, The Royal Hibernian Academy Galleries Dublin, Catherine Edelman Gallery, Michael Mazzeo Gallery, Scope Art Fair, Art Chicago, Jen Bekman Gallery and Camera Club of New York. She has had solo shows of her work at Robert Morat Gallery in Germany, Opera de Rouen Haute Normandie, Keene State College, and Suffolk University. Her first monograph, Singular Beauty published by Fw: was short listed for the Paris Photo-Aperture First Book Award 2012 and selected as one of PhotoEye’s Best Books of 2012. Her work has been published internationally and is in numerous private collections.
