Five artists offer their take on aspects of nature, human and otherwise.
Rachel B. Abrams wall installation reflects on the dangerous results of the human introduction of invading plant species into existing ecosystems. Dave Beck’s video shows the meditative movement of logs, slowly and peacefully sinking to the bottom of the river and then coming up again. Markus Paminger’s sound installation offers a respite from New York’s noise and clutter.
Jon Rosenbaum’s love of the smallest creatures is seen in a delightful installation of small animal and other paper sculptures, and is reflected in his drawings.

Rachel B. Abrams lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received her BFA from the University of Wisconsin—Madison in 1997 and her MFA in Glassworking from Alfred University in 2000. She exhibits regularly throughout the United States and has been awarded residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT; Assilah Forum Foundation, Assilah, Morocco; Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, France; and Custom House Studios, County Mayo, Ireland.
Dave Beck is a new media artist living in Wisconsin. He is the recipient of the 2010 International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge Award, given by the National Science Foundation. Beck’s artwork has been exhibited across the country and featured in publications such as Sculpture Magazine, dailyserving.com, The New York Times and GameScenes: Art in the Age of Videogames.
Renee van der Stelt is an artist and educator living in Baltimore, MD. Her work is listed in the Drawing Center’s Artist Registry. She currently works as faculty mentor for the MFA in Studio Art program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD. Grants include the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Baltimore Office for the Promotion of the Arts and the Maryland State Arts Council. Residencies include the MacDowell Colony and the Roswell Artist in Residence.
Jon Rosenbaum grew up in Commack, New York, with an inordinate joy at whatever traces of nature he was able to find in his suburban surroundings. This interest followed him to college in Illinois; before graduating with a BFA in painting, he minored in entomology and embarked on an independent study project, to collect insects in Southern Europe and North Africa for the Faunistic Survey department of his school. Graduate studies in painting and sculpture came next; now a working artist, he still ponders at his and the rest of humanity’s place among the animals and plants.
Curator, Hanne Tierney is a performance artist/puppeteer whose work has been seen at the Guggenheim and Whitney Museums in New York, at international theater festivals in Europe and most recently at HERE. She is the founder/director of FiveMyles, an exhibition and performance space in Crown Heights, Brooklyn.
