“Regards NYU / Sorbonne PhD” Exhibition

80 Washington Square East

poster for “Regards NYU / Sorbonne PhD” Exhibition

This event has ended.

Regards is the final exhibition of five Sorbonne PhD students who have been in residence at NYU Steinhardt over the past year. 80WSE gallery is pleased to present works produced during this residency in a wide diversity of mediums. The title Regards is a double entendre that plays upon the multiple meanings of the term in English and French.

For three of the artists, New York has been the place to investigate traditional printmaking. Giulia Leonelli is an abstract painter working on the theme of dissolution. In addition to her large-scale paintings, she will present a series of Etchings. Léo Coquet will present a series of QR codes printed on archival paper using traditional etching processes. He will also present a photographic series challenging art history. Caroline Sebilleau will share experiments in Silkscreen in a limited edition artist’s book. She will also create a site-specific Installation commenting on the white cube, photography and sculpture.

For Paul Lamotte and Hadrien Royo, the past year has been the opportunity to go deeper into their own processes. Paul Lamotte will show a series of sculptures and abstract paintings exploring oxidation and time. He will invite the viewer’s participation by encouraging them to help create and, ultimately, destroy the work. Hadrien Royo will present photographic and film-based works illustrating the darkened streets of downtown Manhattan in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. He will also show an installation using photography and copper piping that touches on memory energy and ontology.
