Jack Geary Contemporary presents Federico Cattaneo: Recent Works.

Featuring Cattaneo’s recent paintings, the exhibition focuses on Cattaneo’s oil paintings on found wood, upholstery canvas and silk panels.

“Federico Cattaneo makes deceptively simple abstractions underwritten by a sophisticated understanding of the dynamics and limitations of pictorial representation” writes Peter Benson Miller, an independent curator.

In Cattaneo’s most recent works, “he thins out the grid, reducing it to a delicate filigree laid down on the surface of the canvas. At the same time, the riot of accumulated paint beneath it subsides to a thin veneer of translucent hues reminiscent of a sky at twilight” writes Miller.

Cattaneo collects patterns from the study of gates, fences, and old buildings in decay and overlays carved and painted lines that are both spontaneous and premeditated. While regular patterning survives it evaporates into semi-transparent tracings. In this way, Cattaneo has developed a tension in the dialogue between space and surface pattern.

Federico Cattaneo was born in Argentina. He received his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012 and his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2009. He was the recipient of the George and Ann Siegel fellowship in 2012. His work has been exhibited internationally, in both Argentina and Chicago.
