J. Cacciola Gallery presents birds, beasts, and flowers, an exhibition featuring new works by Rebecca Saylor Sack. This is the artist’s first solo show with J. Cacciola Gallery.

In birds, beast, flowers, Rebecca Saylor Sack’s paintings are inspired by the traditions of still life and memento mori as well as the speculative fictions of fantasy and science fiction. Her paintings court the extremities of stability and riot, growth and decay.

The objects in Rebecca Saylor Sack’s paintings are gleaned for their personal resonance; flowers the artist has personally cultivated, and bones she has collected. She paints from life, often completing the paintings in a single sitting. Dense, velvety paint builds forms that seemingly expand to subsume the image. Paint is layered and reworked directly on the canvas, leaving direct evidence of the painter’s hand or action. Brilliant reds radiate against hues of vibrating purples while electric oranges clash alongside shades of blue. The vibrant coloring along with the materiality of paint reveals a whimsical quality, which heightens a sense of disorientation and the hallucinatory.

Rebecca Saylor Sack received her MFA from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 2005 and her BFA from The Cooper Union in 2001. She was awarded a Fleisher Challenge Exhibition in 2007, and in 2003 she received the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship from the United States Department of Education. Sack has been a visiting artist and lecturer at multiple institutions, and in 2006 she awarded a residency at Artist’s Enclave at I-Park in East Haddam, Connecticut. The artist has participated in solo and group exhibitions nationwide and internationally.
