This event has ended.

The exhibition will include new works created specifically for this show by gallery artists, including painters Willem Andersson, Rachel Bone, Edward del Rosario, Jeff Depner, Jackie Meier, Asuka Ohsawa, Gina Ruggeri, and sculptor Eva Hild. Each of the participating artists has shown with Nancy Margolis Gallery before except for Jeff Depner, who will have his first solo show with Nancy Margolis in October 2013.
WILLEM ANDERSSON, Stockholm, Sweden, works with graphite and paint on canvas, paper, and wood. Andersson’s surreal, meticulously rendered scenes of untamed landscapes, billowing clouds of smoke, and anonymous portraits are sometimes haunting and often sardonic. Still, Andersson’s ambiguities leave viewers to unravel or interpret the stories on their own. Andersson graduated from Stockholms Universitet, Sweden, and also attended Idun Loven School of Arts, Stockholm, Forsberg School of Graphics, Stockholm, and Parsons Paris School of Design. He has exhibited in many cities throughout the world including Stockholm, Rome, Copenhagen, and Turin. Andersson had his first solo show with Nancy Margolis Gallery, Is the house still on fire, in October 2012.
RACHEL BONE, Baltimore, Maryland, creates lyrical and often humorous ink and gouache paintings by adding small absurdities to familiar scenes or objects. Influenced by Scandinavian folk art and children’s book illustration, Bone pays particular attention to line and pattern in her lighthearted narrative works. Bone received her BFA in printmaking from Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY. She has exhibited throughout the U.S. and her work is included in numerous collections: New York Times, New York, NY; EMI Music/Virgin Records, London, England, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Bone first showed her work with Nancy Margolis Gallery in a group exhibition, Fun and Whimsy, February 2013.
EDWARD DEL ROSARIO, New York, employs rich color and fine brushes to meticulously paint imaginary characters in stage-like environments. His narrative paintings, oil on linen over panel, are serious in mood, yet tongue-in-cheek, and always enigmatic. In turn, they inspire dialogue between the viewer and the scene’s actors, whose subversive actions quietly surprise. Del Rosario received his MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI and his BFA from University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS. He has had numerous solo and group shows throughout the U.S. and abroad and was awarded the silver medal at the Art Director’s Club 88th Annual Awards, 2009 and the illustration gold medal from the Society of Publication Designers, 2009. In 2007 he received the MacDowell Fellowship, and in 2005 the Special Editions Fellowship from the Lower East Side Printshop. His work can be seen in many private and public collections, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
JEFF DEPNER, Vancouver, Canada, explores compositional structure through the relationship between colors in his abstract paintings. Architectonic yet organic, Depner paints layered triangular forms, creating a functioning system of interacting parts. Depner received his BFA in illustration and design from Capilano University, Vancouver. He has exhibited across the U.S. and Canada, including a recent solo exhibition at Parts Gallery, Toronto. In 2011 Depner was featured in Rising Young Artists to Keep an Eye On! published by Daab Books. Depner will have his first solo show with Nancy Margolis Gallery in October 2013.
EVA HILD, Sweden, will exhibit her ethereal, flowing ceramic sculptures, for which she is well known. Interested in the dualism between negative and positive space, explorations of air, light, and movement are central to her works. Hild received her MFA from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, namely the 2007 Visual Art Fund grant, 2005 Special Prize at the World Ceramic Biennale, Korea, and the 2003 Sten A. Ollson Fund for Science and Culture. Her work can be found in public and private collections including the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, the Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Japan, the Museum of Contemporary Ceramics, Shanghai, the Mint Museum, North Carolina, the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo, the National Museum, Stockholm, and the Borås Museum of Contemporary Art, Borås, Sweden.
JACKIE MEIER, New York, explores the way color informs shape, line and pattern in her bold, brilliantly-colored abstract paintings. Meier’s overlapping planes of opulent color, some fractured and geometric, some more fluid and organic, transform her large-scale oil paintings into dynamic compositions. Meier earned her MFA in painting from Pratt Institute, NY and her BA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA. She has shown widely in New York, including a recent solo show, Razzmatazz, 2013, at Nancy Margolis Gallery, and in exhibitions at Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, Brooklyn, Andre Zarre, NY, and Denise Bibro, NY. In 2011, Meier participated in a group show, “Ghost in the Machine” curated by Stephen Westfall for Lennon, Weinberg, Inc., NY. Her studio is in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
ASUKA OHSAWA, New York, has a passion for visual storytelling, rooted in both the artist’s personal history and in the cultural heritage of her native country, Japan, which, during the time of the artist’s childhood, was immersed in manga and anime. Ohsawa seeks to create her own mode of storytelling, one that speaks to the human experience of our contemporary world through her fantastical and mythological scenes and anthropomorphized characters. Ohsawa received her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA and her BFA from California State University, Long Beach, CA. She has exhibited in the United States and in Italy, and is represented in private collections in the United States and Europe. Recent awards include residencies: Frans Masereel Centrum Residency in Kasterlee, Belgium, and Center for Book Arts Residency in New York, NY.
GINA RUGGERI, New York, paints on porous, transparent canvases—stretched polyester mesh—which enable playful illusions that verge on abstraction. Ruggeri’s delicately rendered images of matter—clay, lava, earth—not only take on recognizable shapes, but also become symbols for human gestures, emotions, and situations. Through the creative act of breathing life into matter, Ruggeri references the art making process itself. Ruggeri received her MFA from the Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT and her BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at The Gallery @ 1GAP, Brooklyn, NY and Nancy Margolis Gallery, and a solo project at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Ridgefield, CT in 2010. Her awards include a 2010–2011 grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and a 2008 NYFA fellowship in painting. She teaches at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY and lives and works in Brooklyn.
