This event has ended.

Mulherin + Pollard presents The Other Ends, new drawings by Winnie Truong. Examining and distorting historic conventions of portraiture within contemporary drawing, Truong continues her ongoing relationship with hair beyond aesthetic and beauty. The Other Ends features a company of illusory subjects through which the artist explores tensions between our surface identities and what remains concealed. Truong’s subjects become a visual representation of the physicality involved throughout her drawing practice. The narrative described is one joyfully embracing a choice of concentrated marks and expressive line.

Reimagining hair as a living extension of the self and personality, elaborate coifs adorn and protectively envelop Truong’s subjects. Constructions to shield and keep the outside at bay become objects of self-definition; a circular and self-consuming feat. Truong gives us static and interpretative visions of a sitter and the conflicts within, her subjects at once being singular and twofold. Through masked visages, mirror images and endless knots, Truong’s new series playfully examines the ambiguous line where the veil ends and the subject begins.

Born in 1988, Winnie Truong lives and works in Toronto. She received her BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design’s drawing and painting program. Truong is the recipient of numerous awards, including the W.O. Forsythe award, the 401 Richmond Career Launcher prize and the BMO 1st! Art Award for Ontario, through which she exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. Truong has exhibited internationally in galleries in Toronto, Los Angeles, Copenhagen and New York. In 2011 her work was featured as a solo presentation at VOLTA, NY . Her work is in numerous collections, including The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.
