SHOW ROOM | Gowanus presents a collection of new work by Lauren Luloff, opening November 22, 2013.

The show brings together paintings that, with Luloff’s unique approach, combine muslin and bedsheets, stretched and bleached and painted. Patterned areas, mimicking block prints, contrast with expressive brushstrokes, resulting in ambiguous characters and backgrounds. Transparent areas of tulle leave blank spots in these dialogues. Rabbit-skin glue and varnish add texture and vary the surface light. What ensue are balances of creation and entropy—sketches of plant life among breathing gaps in the fabric.

Lauren Luloff lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Since receiving her M.F.A. at Bard in 2010, she has shown her work
at numerous venues, including Galerie Lelong, Thomas Erben, Tanya Bonakdar, and the Queens Museum of Art. Recent solo shows include an exhibition of small works at Horton Gallery, New York (2012); and Dark Interiors and Bright Landscapes at Halsey McKay, East Hampton, NY (2012). Most recently her work was presented by Cooper Cole in Toronto and the NADA Fair in New York; and included in SHOW ROOM’s Summer Ceylon (July 2013).

Her work has received mention in T Magazine, the New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, The Huffington Post,
Gallerist NY, and the Village Voice.
