This event has ended.

Howard Scott Gallery presents a solo exhibition by the German painter Werner Schmidt. The exhibition takes its title Berlin Windows, from a suite of paintings executed in 2009-10 similarly to the Berlin Blues suite of paintings from 2005.

Mr. Schmidt describes himself as not atypical German artist of his generation, in that he has been surrounded by influences from Europe and from the United States, by which he means New York City. An especially important influence on his thinking and his work, he cites art informal in Europe and abstract Expressionism in New York with particular emphasis on Antonio Tàpies and Mark Rothko.

The paintings, however, come from another point of departure, another kind of perception altogether. Schmidt moves his abstractions further away from his observation of the external visual world. His single panel canvases contain less broad sweeping strokes and are less bound to the landscape and thus contain a more existential form of liberation. There is a freshness and fullness of a new pictorial space. The residue of paint that slices through the thinly opaque areas on the top and sides give evidence of a painterly process yet, the work is less about process, than it’s about endurance and insight.

Werner Schmidt was born in the Black Forest region in 1953. For the past several years, he has divided his time between studios in the towns of Oberkirch and Berlin. The artist was included in a recent exhibition at the Royal Hiberian Academy in Dublin, Ireland entitled “Joyce in Art”. His work is in numerous collections in Europe and in the United States. The forthcoming marks his eighth exhibition with Howard Scott Gallery.
