This event has ended.

In 1913, the foundation of the present art paradigm was being formed. Duchampʼs Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 was exhibited at the first Armory Show in New York; Black Square by Malevich appeared in the Futurist opera, Victory Over the Sun; De Chirico was mastering Pittura Metafisica; it was also a “landmark” year for cubism with Picasso and Braque defining and redefining a style that has, perhaps, cast a shadow larger than any over art. From these five artists, every subsequent art movement is born: from modernism, to post-modernism, to post-studio practice.

Today we find ourselves in a critical moment for art; a time when virtually everything can function as art if it is the intent of the artist. A question often brought up is, why would one still paint when art has become less concerned with the decorative? A simple meal of pad thai substitutes the painterly academic inquiry or expression.

Currently Untitled screams loud and clear that painting is an answer to the woes and confusion of where art is hundred years from the beginning. The works in the exhibition are informed by the history of art and, more specifically, by the language of painting. The artists collectively use their canonical understanding to push painting forward. Abstraction, form, powerful mark making, bold color, exploration of space, and the use of metaphor, tackle directly the importance of painting as not only a historical model, but as a conceptual act and choice of the artist.
