This event has ended.

‘Munch Gallery announces two solo exhibitions: Rose Eken (DK), ‘Love is the Drug’ and Marshall Weber (US), ‘Yesterday is Dead’. While Eken is concerned with the structures of love, coupling and hero worship, Weber, on the other hand, attempts to deface nostalgia by dismantling personal items and past relations. Both artists will be present at the opening reception, wednesday the 9th.

Rose Eken:
Eken’s practice revolves around the paraphernalia and detritus of rock and roll culture. Working across a range of media including miniatures in cardboard, sculpture and ceramics, video-installation, and large-scale embroidery, Eken faithfully recreates the peripheral objects of rock, punk and DIY history. Construct and reality meet in the metaphorical gap between the real world and intimate fantasy – between raw male guitar energy and a more fragile and feminine miniature universe.

For the exhibition ‘Love is the Drug’, Eken will show a body of new work focusing on her embroideries. The embroidered works are linked together by a series of glazed ceramic works, which are placed in pairs on shelves and plinths in the front room of the gallery. As the title ‘Love is the Drug’ indicates (a reference to the Roxy Music song of the same name) the show investigates notions of Love; of being in love, and of couples. It is about the obsessive love of the fan, the compulsive affection of the musician toward his/her instrument, the infamous bassist tender feelings for his girlfriend and the teenager’s dream of becoming a rock star. It is about the romance and the myths surrounding the world of rock and roll. The pieces in the show all pair up as couples, duos or twins. Everything is handmade, and imperfections between the duplicates add a different character to each piece thus creating dialogue and intimate stories between the work.
