Each artist presents distinctive work that communicates a strong visual language that address contrasting relationships, emotions, and concepts through a variety of mediums. Yona Tukuser creates exceptional depth in her paintings through expressive brushstrokes and complex and contrasting color. Her work is filled with personal expressionism and psychological meaning that addresses the contrasting issues and themes of death, despair, passion, fear, and love. Laurel Shute creates a strong and dynamic visual language rooted in her perceptions of color, space, and shape in her natural surroundings. Her work has developed in art from painting to large sculptures that reflect her empathetic relationship with her natural environment. Similarly, Tadashi Hashimoto focuses on large scale and site specific outdoor sculptures that define and open space suggesting volume and void. He plays with different materials and textures to address and display the paradoxes of mass and space, stability and movement. Wan Kim’s artwork is a reflection of his intrigue with line and space and their spiritual and metaphorical implications. What defines his work is his unique creation of rough linear texture. The meaning of his art resides in the Oriental philosophy on straight lines and their portrayal of the spiritual world of ‘Zen’.
