This event has ended.

To mark the end of SHOW ROOM’s two-year tenure on Suffolk Street, the gallery presents SUMMER CEYLON, a collection of twenty-five artists in a seasonal celebration. The two-week exhibition will present artists whose work picks at the humid center of summer. Hinting at the peaceable and make-believe world of the colonial and exotic, the show fuses the saturated colors with raw metals and organic forms.

Ceylon, the territory now known as Sri Lanka, belonged to the British Commonwealth and to the former Kingdom of Kandy, and in the spirit of that royal title, SUMMER CEYLON presents a plethora of fine treats.

Described in The World Book of 1965 as, “a treasure island of natural wealth and growing things,” which “lies just north of the equator,” Ceylon was seen as a place where “palms thrive in the warm dampness of low plains along the sea,” rich with “valuable stones such as sapphires, rubies, zircons, and moonstones…”

Ceylon has had a long and often violent history. The Moslems believe that Adam and Eve lived there after they left the Garden of Eden…Divers bring up pearls off the coasts. Tuna swim in the waters off Ceylon. Elephants are used as beasts of burden by the Ceylonese.

SHOW ROOM invites you to SUMMER CEYLON’s special collection of the artists below.
