This event has ended.

The stroke of a brush can tell you so much about a person. One simple movement expresses who they are, where they have been, how they are feeling, what they believe and so forth. The application from hand to canvas relays as much information as does verbal communication, allowing another to view one’s inner most feelings and mindset. The connectivity between gesture and interpretation has been a continuing practice within art history, put forth by such notable artists as Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell. Known in the larger context of Abstract Expressionism, this seemingly chaotic interpretation of life projects a balance of raw emotion played out on a canvas with the trials and tribulations that one is faced with daily. This pure, unharnessed analysis of individualism and articulation works as an outlet for both the artist and the viewer, creating a visual conversation that is initiated through the simplicity of a gesture that reflects so much about a person. Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you Ways and Means, a solo show by JMR, as he allows us an uninterrupted peek inside his world through the overtures and subtleties of his expressions through abstractions.

JMR has been continuously developing his gestural techniques for well over a decade, constantly building and deconstructing his approach. Through his roots in Street Art and Graffiti culture, he has provided a fresh and unique touch to the urban environment through his large-scale mural work. Ways and Means provides viewers with the opportunity to witness the depth and versatility of his work, as he covers a range of distinct styles all his own.

Emphasizing both a strong color pallet as well as bold two-tone pieces, JMR is constantly exploring new ways to bring his acrylic paintings to life. Within his process, he can manipulate his abstractions to be as flat or as deep as he likes, creating a well-rounded approach that is both inviting and moving. Simply put, Ways and Means exemplifies his artistic journey, opening the doors for his exciting new interpretations of Abstract Expressionism.
