Derek Eller Gallery presents a three person exhibition of painting and sculpture by William DeLottie, Alicia Gibson, and Adrienne Rubenstein.

William DeLottie uses acrylic paint, aluminum foil, fabric, and layers of paper to create engrossing paintings on a grand scale. The meanings of the paintings are coded in enigmatic imagery that draws from Catholicism, art history, and sexual fantasy. Like Dubuffet, DeLottie communicates primal elements of existence through crude, knowingly-naive figures. The scale, material density, and existential urgency result in an enthralling confluence. The works pulse with primitive and unsettling energy.

William DeLottie lives and works in rural Connecticut. His was work has been featured in William DeLottie: in three states of mind at Artspace, New Haven, CT; William DeLottie Retrospective: Love Letters Straight from the Heart at the Institute for the Cooperation of Art and Research, Paris, France; and the 2000 Whitney Biennial, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; and solo exhibitions at Derek Eller Gallery in 1999 and 2000.

Alicia Gibson’s paintings brim with acerbic humor and candied aggression. The diaristic scrawl and vibrant palette of her text-based paintings often address sexual situations little discussed outside the bedroom. Case in point: A Man to hold My Hair Back, yeah for I’m over the toilet bc I had to drink that much alcohol to sleep with you Remix, PULL OUT pull out?!! and Jizz over Chelsea. The dissonance between the subject of the texts–-pregnancy, alcohol abuse, sexual relations–-and their faux-juvenile rendering result in poignant paintings whose humor germinates from the recognition and discomfort they breed in ourselves.

Alicia Gibson lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BA from Boston College in 2002, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and her MFA from Hunter College in 2009. Her work is currently included in Snail Salon, curated by Adrianne Rubenstein at Regina Rex, Brooklyn. Previously her work has been included in group exhibitions at Newman Popiashvili Gallery, New York; Callicoon Fine Arts, New York; Pigman Gallery, San Francisco; Boston Center for the Arts, Boston; and Envoy Gallery, New York.

Adrianne Rubenstein makes sculptures and paintings characterized by messy insouciance and joy. Decidedly unironic, she uses innocuous imagery to create psychologically charged works as seductive as they are discomforting. The hearts, broccoli, snakes, and butterflies that proliferate in her paintings feign innocence, but are vehicles for desire and desire thwarted. Amongst the crumbling hearts, however, self-deprecation reigns supreme.

Adrianne Rubenstein is a painter, curator and gallery director at James Fuentes. In 2013 she co-curated Forget About the Sweetbreads with artist Joanne Greenbaum, and Snail Salon, currently on view at Regina Rex through December 15th. Adrianne completed her undergraduate studies at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (2006), and her Master’s degree in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute (2011).
