Martin Boyce Exhibition
Tanya Bonakdar Gallery
This event has ended.
Entitled It's Over and Over, Martin Boyce's third solo exhibition at the gallery will transform the ground floor exhibition space into an immersive, dream-like environment of shapes and forms that are at once familiar and entirely new. Drawing on modernist design, these new sculptures juxtapose angular planes and stark geometry with elements that evoke nostalgia: constellations of lanterns, skeletal renderings of chairs and collapsed tables, and tumbling letters that spell out short, poetic phrases. This combination of the hard-edged and romantic plays out in each of these new works, cultivating new meanings and contexts that hover at the intersection of form and function, architecture and sculpture, history and memory.
Winner of the Tate’s 2011 Turner Prize, Martin Boyce (b. 1967) lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland. Recent presentations include the artist's major commission as part of the List Visual Art Center's permanent sculpture program, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, 2011 (solo); No Reflections, Scottish Pavilion, 53rd Venice Biennale, Italy; traveling to DCA, Dundee, Scotland, 2009-2010 (solo); Baltic Presents Turner Prize 2011, Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK, 2011-2012 (group); Alexander Calder and Contemporary Art: Form, Balance, Joy, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; traveling to Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, TX; Orange County Museum of Sculpture, Newport Beach, CA; Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, NC, 2010-2012 (group).
