This event has ended.

The nonprofit Carter Burden Gallery announces the opening of its new location, a 2,271 square-foot gallery space on West 28th Street, which is empowering re-emerging older professional artists through the exhibition and cultivation of their work. The new Carter Burden Gallery is generously underwritten by its lead sponsor, the Macquarie Group Foundation, and is committed to artists who have faced increasingly limited opportunities to show their work as they age, despite any past renown. Exhibitions are curated based solely on quality and impact and represent older artists, many of whom were important participants in the Abstract Expressionist movement of the 1960s in New York City.

Barbara Coleman “Letting the Light In” is on view April 11 through May 16. Barbara Coleman’s large abstract paintings harness contrasting elements into harmonious visual experiences that are at once lyrical and joyful, yet full of depth and complexity. Coleman uses organic curves and calligraphic forms as illuminating counterpoints to the anchoring geometric and angular shapes. These gestural forms are at times slow and expressive and in other instances pure bold bravado. Coleman’s palette is both vibrant and nuanced. She uses both color and brushwork to impart sensations of fluctuating opacity and translucency. Her use of shape and tone communicate both a sense of depth and movement. All of these elements converge in perfect balance in an elaborate visual journey for the viewer.
