Loretta Howard Gallery presents RICHARD ANUSZKIEWICZ: NEW WORK 2003 – 2013, the artist’s first exhibition of new work in New York in over 10 years.
Anuszkiewicz’s continual experiment with optics and color began at Yale University where he studied with Joseph Albers in the 1950s. His work continues to employ an ever evolving series of compositional motifs as the armature for brilliant chromatic displays. Since the 1960’s with the artists Victor Vasarely in France and Bridget Riley in England he has been acknowledged as a founder of the “Op Art” movement internationally. Since that time he has been known as “this country’s foremost colorist and geometric abstractionist”.
The artist’s own statement from the exhibition “Americans 1963” at the Museum of Modern Art still holds true today:
My work is of an experimental nature and has centered on an investigation into the effects of complimentary colors of full intensity when juxtaposed and the optical changes that occur as a result and a study of the dynamic effect of the whole under changing conditions of light and the effect of light on color.
Anuszkiewicz’ new work uses carefully painted flat surfaces that fuse, vibrate and pulse against one another with a variety of ensuing effects. The work in this exhibition is a result of over a decade long exploration of color and form initially influenced by the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
Long a part of the historical cannon of American abstraction, Richard Anuszkiewicz continues to establish himself as a painter of great virtuosity. His new work utilizes color, light and form with an economy of means that belies his 60 year oeuvre.
