This event has ended.

Some of the greatest artists are those without formal training or any solid rank in the established art world. The term “outsider art” is sometimes applied to those rebellious artists whose creations are derived straight from their rugged soul. But what happens when traditional galleries begin to embrace the outsider? Ross Brodar, an artist based in New York, will be showing a selection of works that represent his outsider presence at Van Der Plas Gallery alongside Ukrainianborn artist, Konstantin Bokov. The show will run from December 12, 2013 to January 12, 2014 at 156 Orchard St., New York, NY.

Influenced by his urban landscape, Ross Brodar’s early work can be found on scrap pieces of wood or metal. Some of his best work is painted onto doors that he found on the street near his studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Over the years he has painted more and more tribal faces and figures on traditional canvases using acrylic paint. However, his crude character still stands out with bold colors and thick strong brush strokes that can be seen from across the room. Every painting is truly raw. Owing nothing to tradition or trends, Ross’s work may be confrontational at first, but must be perceived from outside the boundaries of traditional art.

Ross Brodar grew up as a defiant teen on Long Island, NY and spent several years in a therapeutic facility where he discovered painting. Always in tune with his rebellious nature, Ross Brodar spent a decade stationed on the street outside of the Outsider Art Fair, protesting their insider exclusiveness. He often sold more work than the artists found inside the fair. Then, a breakthrough: Amsterdam-based Olof Gallery picked up Ross in 2008 and represented him in the Fair for the next four years during which time he sold thousands of dollars worth of work. Orphaned Angels will mark the end of another successful year and the blessed beginning of a new one.
