This event has ended.

Onishi Project is pleased to announce Renewal – Contemporary Calligraphy by David Chang and Ayako Wakahara. This exhibition features David Chang’s ink on paper works and Ayako Wakahara’s character carvings and pictographs.

David Chang lives and works in New York City. He was born in Seoul, Korea in 1971 and grew up in a pastor family in the United States. For the past decade, Chang has developed his unique style through his journey with eastern and western masters of calligraphy. David Chang provides equal access to his works for viewers regardless of cultural backgrounds by embracing the tools and techniques from western calligraphy. His works have been included in several group exhibitions internationally and two solo shows at Onishi Gallery.

David Chang transcends the craft element of western calligraphy by adopting eastern ideologies. He connects calligraphy to contemporary art in the West and abstracts from objects such as Chinese scrolls and spirit stones. Brice Marden’s graphics embody a similar approach. Chang endows conceptual depth to his English text from East Asian ideologies in a lyrical abstraction approach, utilizing a calligraphic gesture that is intuitive and deconstructive.

Ayako Wakahara lives and works in New York City. She was born in Aichi, Japan in 1982. Upon receiving her degree in Calligraphy from Daito Bunka University, she made her way to New York and had her first group show at Onishi Gallery in 2007. In 2008, she exhibited her works at Consulate General of Japan in New York.

Wakahara carves characters into woods and abstracts her works. Her work is unique as one example of the Japanese aesthetic – wabi-sabi (佗寂), which translates as the acceptance of imperfection. She has little control over the look of calligraphy because it could never look as visually perfect as calligraphy on paper. For the pictographs, Ayako Wakahara treats them as abstract art or design.
