Baruch College presents the exhibition Revisiting a Legacy: Paintings by Five Contemporary Chinese Artists at the Mishkin Gallery.
In Revisiting a Legacy, the artists appropriate aspects of their cultural legacy to create their own postmodern commentary on Chinese history and traditional life. For example, Sun Xiuting re-envisions the Chinese masterpiece Night Banquet of Han Xizai by Gu Hongzhong from the 10th century by painting it in an impressionistic style. Sun embellishes his version of the banquet with additional colors and details. He transforms the more austere painting from the 10th Century into a lavish, painterly vision of the same event, and he paints it in a western style.
Zhang Hui’s paintings of the “modern girl” refer to traditional Chinese paintings of women, but Zhang drastically changes the imagery by giving the young woman a cigarette and depicting her in a cartoon-like style. Memories of traditional customs and daily life are formed into visual images by Chaolun Baatar and Guo Qingfeng, while the abstract markings of Yi Xuan recall stone carvings from the Han dynasty. All of these artists draw from their rich cultural heritage, but they also transform their references into a new vision that is distinctly their own.
