D’Amelio Gallery presents a solo exhibition with Los Angeles-based artist Jedediah Caesar. In Caesar’s sculptures, disparate found materials—both organic and inorganic—are amassed as one in a range of sculptural forms like resin and clay. His bricks, panels, and accumulations are composed of objects, permanently suspended in solid, dense space and often obscured by dirt, dust, pigment, and a powerful cutting process. Caesar’s multilayered medium, like a sealant, preserves fragments in both temporal and spatial dimensions, acting as an organizing principle, imposing boundaries and order.

New patterns, both abstract and social, emerge upon viewing his terrestrial compositions, hinting at the collective history of objects once accumulated, purchased, or consumed. In collecting his materials, the artist mines the natural world as well as human habitats, relationships, and circumstances. The aggregate matter, not wholly legible, allows the viewer to only glimpse the familiar—a piece of paper, coin, bark from a tree—activating our tendency towards personal investigation and narrative.

In this exhibition, Caesar presents three related yet distinct groups of works:
A group of platforms hold massive coins whose currency is formed in California, Massachusetts and New York State.

A film plays continuously in the bottom margins of the space. It follows a trip from the city to the desert and back again.

Like dislocated signs, cross-sections of Palm hang singly or in pairs.

Jedediah Caesar lives in Los Angeles. Recent solo exhibitions include the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects. Caesar’s upcoming solo exhibition at the deCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Boston opens May 24, 2012. Caesar was a participant in the 2008 Whitney Biennial and has been included in exhibitions at Saatchi Gallery in London, Orange County Museum of Art in Los Angeles, Human Resources in Los Angeles, Fundament Foundation in the Netherlands, and Bloomberg SPACE gallery in London.
