Lori Bookstein Fine Art presents an exhibition of new paintings by Helen Miranda Wilson. This is the artist‘s second solo show with the gallery.

The current exhibition is comprised of non-representational paintings that were made over the last three years and which show an obvious progression from her previous series. The work incorporates flowing lines of color reminiscent of the forms that meet the eye whenever we are in nature, surrounded by its elegant repetitions. Symmetry and small variations that result from the freehand application of paint further reference the natural world, adding an organic quality to these paintings.

The paint is applied meditatively, not gesturally or obsessively. Each picture represents a journal of many days, recorded by a method that slows time for the artist as she works.

Many years of painting and drawing from direct observation as well as the artist's early exposure to the art and design of the Bauhaus movement have greatly influenced this most recent work.

Although Wilson no longer uses recognizable subject matter as she did for most of her career, these paintings are done with the same materials and techniques and in the same small format for which she has always been known. The surfaces are open, left unvarnished. They have a contiguous, skin-like quality due to the artist’s use of oil paint with no added medium. The under-layers, visible through weaving lines of color, are done wet-into-wet by blending the paint softly into itself with fan brushes. She has used this technique to blur the lines between one section of a painting and the next, since the early 1970s.

After living for decades in New York City, Wilson now makes her home in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, the town she grew up in. She keeps honeybees and chickens successfully and serves as a member of the local government. She paints full-time and teaches occasionally.
