NOoSPHERE Arts, an artist‐run, nonprofit exhibition and performance venue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, presents Neverending Story featuring visual artists Kari Steihaug and Tina Jonsbu.

Neverending Story is conceived as a second chapter to Kari Steihaug’s and Tina Jonsbu’s two‐person show at the Trøndelag Center for Contemporary Art in Trondheim, Norway, in 2006. Meditative and unobtrusive, the works of both artists embody the concept of “the time it takes” to manufacture an object; the intention being to create process‐oriented, thought‐provoking pieces that also have an aesthetic dimension.  Though markedly different visually, these two bodies of work share a similar pulse and rhythm.

“The abstract forms of Jonsbu’s pencil drawings communicate visually with Steihaug’s strands of wool. Ironically,Jonsbu’s ornamental experiments on paper are reminiscent of knitting patterns, while Steihaug’s works – in yarn – never elicit such associations” Henning Mortensen, Art Critic.

Dialogue with the exhibition space is crucial to their artistic process – to make use of the room’s energy and to investigate opportunities for interaction and correspondences between the space and their respective pieces. Steihaug and Jonsbu create work that is flexible in format and size: books, installations and drawings, both large and small. Playful and organic in essence, their combined vision makes for a dynamic and changeable whole.

The exhibit will feature Steihaug ’s mixed‐media installation After the Market (Unraveling wool clothes / knitted image after the painting The Gleaners (1857) by Jean‐François Millet, please see detail above to left). This multi‐layered piece charged with art‐historical references won the FineArt Award at the Annual State Exhibition in Oslo in 2011 and will travel to the Haugar Art Museum in Tønsberg, Norway, after its appearance in NYC.
