This event has ended.

Nicelle Beauchene Gallery presents the second New York solo exhibition of paintings by Berlin-based artist Anja Schwörer.

In Chance & Necessity Schwörer considers the relationship of photography within her practice, presenting pictures rendered from a polemic process of deletion and formation to investigate systems of cause and effect, order and disorder, rhythm and discord. Utilizing bleach as her medium, similar to how light is used in a photographic process, the images are burned onto the canvas while allowing the bleach to yield fluctuations of color, shifting spatial tensions and variant values of positive and negative space.

The title of the exhibition, borrowed from Jacques Monod’s book on biology, not only alludes to Schwörer’s controlled process in the work (the folding of textiles following geometric orders, structures and sequences), but to the part of her work which she cannot control (the introduction of bleach to the canvas). Through navigating a shifting ground between chance and necessity Schwörer’s canvases offer a disjunction between the raw deconstruction of their materials and the splendor of their imagery.
