VPL and Vara Fine Arts present Second Skin, an exhibition and book co-curated by Victoria Bartlett and Renée Vara.
Second Skin is a two-part conceptual project that surveys Bartlett's fascination with muscular anatomy and human skin. As often evident in her own designs, Bartlett explores the concepts of corporal dissection, examination and re-assemblage. The compilation of images, which make up the book and the group show, represents the collective consciousness about the contemporary body.
For the publication of INPUT #4: Second Skin, artists were invited to blindly contribute up to six works contemplating corporeality. The curators loosely mimic the Surrealists’ Exquisite Corpse game by assembling the individual artists’ submissions into a singular “body” of work. Covered in latex and subject to touch, wear and decay, the book offers itself as a metaphor for the contemporary body. INPUT#4 (Summer 2012) is a limited edition publication of 150 copies, and features an introductory essay by Chris Townsend.
