Michael Hilsman "The Opposite of Love"
Louis B. James Gallery
This event has ended.
Louis B. James presents Michael Hilsman’s first solo exhibition in New York, The Opposite of Love. Hilsman works within the boundaries of painting to examine both art and art-making’s talismanic potential.
The Opposite of Love is comprised of large and small-scale paintings of men, as well as still lives. Hilsman draws from rudimentary source material such as his own body and fruits and vegetables to construct non-literal pictures that relate to notions of eroticism, elementary magic and ‘backyard’ spiritualism.
Michael Hilsman was born in Burbank, California in 1984 and lives in New York. He received an MFA from Hunter College and a BA from UC Santa Cruz and the University of Delhi, India and is adjunct faculty at The School of Visual Art and Design at Beaconhouse National University, Lahore, Pakistan. He recently had a solo exhibition at Galleria Glance, Turin, Italy (2012) and his work was featured in Modern Painters in January 2012 in the article “One Hundred Artists to Watch.”
